Guts, Grit, and Gusto: Dr. Erica Miller Inspires Students at Valley Academy
The David Labkovski Project (DLP) recently had the incredible honor of bringing Dr. Erica Miller—Holocaust survivor, psychologist, author, and motivational speaker—to speak to the 9th-grade class at Valley Academy of Arts and Science, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Dr. Miller shared her extraordinary life story with students, taking them on a journey from her childhood years spent in a Nazi-controlled camp in Ukraine, to her courageous immigration to the United States, and the successful career she later built as a psychologist and international speaker.
Her visit was a powerful alignment with DLP’s mission to educate through personal narratives and history, bringing the past to life in a way that deeply resonates with younger generations. Through her story, Dr. Miller emphasized the importance of perseverance, courage, and what she calls living with “Guts, Grit, and Gusto.”
Her message wasn’t just about survival—it was about thriving. Dr. Miller encouraged students to face challenges head-on, make the most of every opportunity, and never let their circumstances define their future.
The students walked away not just with a deeper understanding of history, but with a living example of what it means to turn pain into purpose. Dr. Miller’s words left a lasting impression, reminding all of us that resilience, determination, and passion can truly shape a remarkable life.
