As a Holocaust survivor my belief in a deity has been challenged, but there’s no question in my mind that I am Jewish. The rituals and cultural aspects of Judaism are ingrained in my soul, my very being. Faith is just one aspect of religion. It is the confidence or trust you have that helps make sense of the world and is not dependent on analytical proof. Whether faith is manifested in spiritual practices or religious rituals, it is confidence or trust in God or mankind that is important. Having faith helps us in time of need. For Jews, faith is about following the Ten Commandments. It’s about living life according to a set of principles, respecting others. It’s about honor, justice, righteousness and participating in Tikun Olam—repairing the world.
