I am a Holocaust survivor, but that’s not what defines me. I have an excitement about being alive that comes from knowing that other people can’t tell me what I can or can’t do, that I am not limited by my religious heritage, that I am not going to be stereotyped by my age, gender or other social factors. The most important message I can give to young people is to live life with gusto. Recognize the decisions and choices you make will shape your life. If you don’t like the direction you’re going, make new choices. Live in the moment, knowing that we are always evolving. I’m going to live to be 120. Just watch!

To live in the moment, become aware of your surroundings. Think about what’s working and what’s not working for you. Then develop new thoughts, behaviors and habits, one at a time. Use meditation, music, art and other sensory input to calm your mind and focus on the here and now—not the past or the future. Smile and laugh more. Be of service. Give to others. Practice gratitude. If you implement these simple ideas, you will become more animated, excited and happier in your daily living.
